Royal Bank of Scotland was founded in 1727. It operates as a retail bank with its headquarters in Edinburgh, Scotland, UK. The bank is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Royal Bank of Scotland Group plc. Royal Bank of Scotland has its roots in the Equivalent Company, which got chartered in 1727 as the Royal Bank of Scotland. It commenced business immediately and the bank is credited as being the first bank to provide an overdraft facility in 1728. From its inception, the Royal Bank of Scotland developed a strong rivalry with the Bank of Scotland –another Edinburgh based bank presently owned by the Lloyds Banking Group. The Royal Bank of Scotland opened its London branch in 1874, but was later prevented from expanding further into English territory as the government restricted Scottish banks from opening branches in England and vice versa. This embargo was not lifted until the 1960s.
