MBNA Europe was established in 1993 as a subsidiary of the defunct MBNA Corporation and sister company to MBNA America Bank N.A., a major issuer of credit cards to the U.S market. The company was built to serve the European market, and enjoyed steady growth through a largely successful affinity marketing strategy used by its parent company in the United States. MBNA Europe is today the largest credit card issuer in the U.K. with a customer base exceeding 7 million. Its strategy of affiliating with various organizations has ensured MBNA Europe and its range of credit cards are endorsed by over 800 organizations. January 1, 2006 marked the day, MBNA was acquired by the Bank of America in a cash and stocks deal. Bank of America's credit card portfolio were merged into that of MBNA. A few months after being acquired, MBNA changed its name to FIA Card Services, with its European counterpart still retaining the MBNA Europe name. MBNA Europe is headquartered in Chester, England.
