Lloyds TSB is a direct product of mergers between Lloyds Bank and Trustee Savings Bank (TSB) in 1995. The Lloyds TSB brand was created after this merger. Before then, Lloyds Bank Plc. was a commercial bank operating within the United Kingdom. The bank was incorporated in 1865 but began operations in a century earlier in 1765. John Taylor and Sampson Lloyd are recognized as founders of Lloyds Bank. It initially operated as a private bank up until 1865 when it transformed into a joint stock company. Lloyds Bank had a merger attempt with Barclays Bank in 1968 but the deal fell through. In 1972, Lloyds Bank presented Cashpoint, the first cash machine to employ the use of plastic cards having a magnetic stripe.
