Bank of Scotland currently operates as a wholly owned subsidiary of the Lloyds Banking Group following an acquisition in January 2009. The Bank of Scotland was originally a bank with predominant interests in Scotland but since increased its presence to other parts of the United Kingdom. A series of consolidations in the UK banking sector bolstered Bank of Scotland’s chances when Halifax Bank agreed to a merger in 2001. Both banks come out of a successful merger bearing the Halifax Bank of Scotland group name but as part of a business strategy deciding to keep both Halifax and Bank of Scotland as brand names. While HBOS branches kept a uniform Bank of Scotland name for all branches dedicated to business banking; branches in other locations seemed to exchange names based on market dominance. Bank of Scotland branches in England assumed Halifax while Halifax branches in Scotland assumed a new Bank of Scotland brand name. Till date the Bank of Scotland continues to provide commercial and retail banking services to customers throughout the UK.
